After receiving her MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York, Dr. Lien completed her residency in anesthesiology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.
Following residency, Dr. Lien joined The Department of Anesthesiology at Weill Cornell Medical College. Over the course of her tenure there she pursued her interest in the pharmacology of neuromuscular blocking agents leading a research effort that defined the pharmacokinetics of mivacurium and developed cisatracurium for clinic use. More recently her research has focused on safety in the use of these agents and the impact of their use on patient outcomes. Dr. Lien was also the Vice Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department and the Residency Program Director. After 27 years at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Lien moved to Wisconsin to become the John P. Kampine Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at The Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Lien just completed her term as a Director on the American Board of Anesthesiology, serving as its President from 2015-2016. During her 12 years as a member of the Board of Directors, there were significant changes to the processes of board certification and maintenance of certification to better suit the requirement to remain current with new developments and practices over the course of a career. She remains an examiner for the ABA as well as a member of its OSCE Development Committee and its MOCA Minute Committee.
Dr. Lien has participated in nearly 100 invited lectures, workshops and presentations, both nationally and internationally. She has published extensively and developed educational programs related to the pharmacology of neuromuscular blocking agents, antagonism of residual paralysis and the use of monitors of depth of neuromuscular blockade.
